Browning School
Buzzer Magazine—Core Values Series: Honesty, Dignity, Curiosity, and Purpose
In 2019, Designlounge reimagined The Buzzer for The Browning School—establishing a flexible editorial system that has now grown to 13 editions. Within this framework, a four-issue series focused on Browning’s core values: Honesty, Dignity, Curiosity, and Purpose.
Each value became the conceptual anchor for its respective issue, shaping both narrative structure and visual expression. Through bold, expressive typography and lively photography, the magazine explored how these values are lived and taught—articulating relational depth, academic rigor, and character formation as central to a Browning education.
The Honesty Issue
Honesty and integrity are central to Browning’s mission of shaping young men of character. The School reinforces the value of honesty across all aspects of school life—from assemblies and classroom discussions to literature that invites reflection, and even in conversations around the responsible use of AI.
For this edition of the Buzzer we developed a bold, vibrant design language to explore both the obvious as well as nuanced dimensions of what it means to practice honesty.
The Dignity Issue
In a cultural moment often marked by division and diminished civil discourse, this edition of the Buzzer centered on dignity as an essential foundation and value of a Browning education. Within the School’s walls, boys are encouraged to engage openly, listen generously, and recognize the inherent worth of others. The feature story explored how dignity is cultivated through thoughtful dialogue, classical study, and the analysis of diverse narratives that deepen empathy and strengthen community.
The issue demonstrated that dignity is not merely an innate trait but a value that can be intentionally taught—shaping curiosity, honesty, and purpose in meaningful ways. We expressed this theme through bold, expressive typography that underscored the urgency and strength of the message, creating a visual language as confident and principled as the ideas it conveyed.
The Curiosity Issue
At the heart of students’ ability to learn is a natural sense of curiosity—one of the four core values of a Browning education. This edition of the Buzzer explored how that curiosity fuels intellectual risk-taking, creative problem-solving, and the pursuit of personal passions.
To express this theme visually, we developed a dynamic system of icons radiating from a central mark of curiosity. Each icon represented an area of interest or talent—ranging from academics and athletics to the arts—forming a flexible visual language that could expand as widely as the boys’ own inquiries.
The Purpose Issue
This edition of the Buzzer continues our exploration of Browning’s four core values by focusing on Purpose. In a volatile world, purpose provides a steady foundation—an inward commitment that reaches outward, guiding boys to connect meaningfully with others and seek positive change. At Browning, academic achievement is paired with deep reflection, mentorship, and intentional modeling so that learning becomes more than preparation for career success.
Finding purpose requires resisting distraction, comparison, and the pressure to measure worth by status. Instead, boys are encouraged to follow an inner compass—pursuing meaningful questions, cultivating resilience, and recognizing their capacity to shape a better world.
We decided to use strong black and white photography for the feature story.
