Topography of Type
Typographic Investigations
Every neighborhood has a typographic identity as distinct as its architecture — the signs, storefronts, markings, and lettering that accumulate over time into something specific to that place. This project explores whether that landscape can be mapped, collected, and visualized: a topography of type as a way of reading where you are. The goal is both a document and an experience.
The broadsheet-sized experimental publication entitled “Kern your Observations” shows a selection of typographic images taken in a specific area/neighborhood. While “kerning” means to adjust the spaces between letter pairs for optimal legibility, this attention to detail is also a metaphor for deeply examining one’s surroundings.
